SLUGGING may have been all the range last year – but now it’s time to say hello to skin basting.

It seems dermatologists and beauty fans are all raving about the skincare technique which promises to heal your skin barrier and reduce the look of wrinkles and acne.

The term ‘slugging’ was coined by skincare lovers because of the ‘slug-like’ sheen it left on the skin.

The technique involves using your nighttime skincare as normal and then applying an occlusive product as the last step to lock in all the products and ensure your skin stays hydrated while you sleep.

Products such as Vaseline or Egyptian magic cream were the most commonly used products to achieve this, but now it’s time to make way for ‘basting.’

WHAT IS IT?

US-based dermatologist Shereene Idris explained the benefits of the latest beauty trend.

She said: “It’s a term I made up a few years ago as an extension to my lip basting technique.

I do this at night when i’m in a very dry climate or my skin is super dry and parched, and I do it after washing my face.”

The skincare pro added that it was important to use a product with a Zinc Oxide base, the kind you find from nappy rash cream.

Applying the product as a thick layer on her face, she added: “Zinc Oxide is gold little nerds.

“It will help repair your face and heal your skin while locking in hydration.”

And the trend has caught on, skincare fan Leanne Page also raved about the ‘basting’ technique.

She said in one clip: “POV: You found out nappy cream can heal your damaged skin barrier and acne.”

WHY ZINC OXIDE?

Zinc oxide is renowned in the beauty and medical world for it’s healing properties.

Not only can it help soothe cracked and dry skin (say goodbye to fine lines) – it also has anti-inflammatory properties so it can work for pretty much any skin issue.

Because of its moisturising and soothing properties, it’s perfect for when you’ve overdone it wit a retinol or exfoliating acid – or even if your skin is dehydrated from the cold weather.

The dermatologist said: “To the girl who told me to slug with butt paste instead of Vaseline after retinol… I love you.

“That girl was me.”

WHERE TO BUY IT

If you don’t have a baby to steal nappy cream from then don’t panic.

The product is easy to find in supermarkets and pharmacies – and it’s a bargain price too.

You can buy a pot of Sudocrem for as little as £3.75 in Boots.

Bosses at Sudocrem say: “The Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream formula has remained unchanged since 1931.

“A unique blend of ingredients gives Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream its soothing and healing properties.

“The key ingredients in Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream are Zinc oxide, which helps to reduce the loss of fluid from the skin.

I’m so hooked on this after learning it from you! So grateful

“Anhydrous hypoallergenic lanolin, an emollient which soothes and softens skin.

“Benzyl alcohol, which has local anaesthetic and antiseptic properties that help to reduce discomfort.”

People quickly took to the comments section of Shereene’s post claiming her budget-friendly skin hack worked for them.

One person wrote: “I started basting and it has made such a difference in my rosacea.”

Another commented: “I use Sudocrem in the UK. Works great when I overdo the retinol 1%.”

“I’m so hooked on this after learning it from you! So grateful!” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “I now face baste once a week and my skin has never felt softer, thank you.”

“I’ve been doing this because of one of your videos and my skin looks and feels amazing!” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “This has been a game changer for my chapped lips.”
