Major chatbot upgrade to roll out to millions of Android phones days after Elon Musk bashed AI for being ‘insane’
GOOGLE is rolling out the Gemini AI chatbot to millions of Android phones this week inside the Google Messages app.
The AI chatbot – previously known as Bard – will let users help plan events and craft tricky-to-write texts responses all within the native Messages app.
It comes days after Google partially paused Gemini’s public image generation abilities[/caption] So far, the feature is only available in English, except for Canadian users who will also receive it in French[/caption]Users can even use it to have a fun conversation if they’re inbox is empty.
Example prompts offered by Google include:
- I haven’t reached out to my friend in a while. Help me draft a short message to check in and reconnect.
- Suggest a three-course dinner menu that’s impressive but manageable for a novice cook. Dietary restriction: vegetarian.
- I’m going to a social event where I barely know anyone. Come up with a few interesting conversation starters.
Besides asking and answering questions, Gemini can also be used inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Maps, Flights, Hotels and YouTube.
A leak in late January suggested that Gemini inside Google Messages will one day offer image identification and generation.
However, Google has partially paused Gemini’s public image generation abilities following issues with producing historically accurate images.
The issue sparked commentary from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Twitter, where he accused the photo generator of being “insane” and “racist”.
“I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilizational programming clear to all,” Musk wrote in one of the posts.
It followed multiple claims that Gemini would refuse to create images of white people.
Jack Krawczyk, of Gemini Experiences, said: “Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people — that’s generally a good thing as people around the world use it.
“But it’s missing the mark here.
“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately.”
Is my phone eligible?
So far, the feature is only available in English, except for Canadian users who will also receive it in French.
Google has said it will roll out Gemini in phases, beginning with beta testers before widening the the launch to all eligible phones.
These eligible phones include:
- Pixel 6 or later
- Pixel Fold
- Samsung Galaxy S22 or later
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
