My 60p hack gets rid of even the worst rotten egg drain smells – plumbers swear by it, you’ll probably have the key item

BLOCKAGES and smelly drains are two common problems a lot of households face – but luckily, there’s an easy remedy that doesn’t require a plumber.

Kitchen and bathroom drains can often give off a sulphur-smelling reek that could only be compared to smelling like a pile of rotten eggs.

More often that not, this tends to be the result of a clogged drain, as any food waste, hot water, dish soap and oils cause build-up over time.

Meanwhile, if you’ve noticed an unpleasant odour lingering in your bathroom, the floor drains could be the reason behind it.

According to experts, this is cause of a build-up of material as you run the water down the drain, including hair, soap scum and other oily products used in the shower, such as a body scrub.

But whilst the problem is indeed common, there are a few simple ways to unclog the drains and ultimately – banish the egg-like reek.

The plumbing pros at BlockBusters were raving about an easy 60p hack to tackle the issue – and the secret behind it is bleach.

The experts said: “Bleach can be used on every type of drain.

”As a disinfectant, bleach can eliminate the bacteria in drains and plumbing systems.

“You can give your bleach a better chance of clearing the smell by adding hot water.”

The team at City Plumbing recommend diluting the bleach with water when performing this cleaning trick.

They said: “To get rid of the odour – and the build-up – you can mix one part bleach with one part water and pour it down the drain.”

Meanwhile, the industry pros as BlockBuster noted that another option is using hot water – however, not every drain is fit for this hack.

They urged: “Only use boiling water for drains without ceramic basins, such as some kitchen sinks.

“Hot water is still effective and can easily break up smelly blockages, so use this for ceramics.”

However, if none of this works and your kitchen is still smelling of rotten eggs, you can also try the final method – a drain snake.

Tiny yet effective, this “simple piece of equipment” can come in handy when “clearing stubborn, foul-smelling blockages”.

They explained: “It works by extending itself along the length of the drain and can clear hard blockages.”

Is your bottle of bleach about to run out? Shoppers can bag the cleaning essential for as little as 60p from most supermarkets, such as Aldi.

If you don’t have an Aldi nearby, rival Tesco offer Thick Bleach for 70p and Sainsbury’s cheapest option is also priced the same.
