Paramedic warn parents to avoid hot cross buns this Easter, as she explains the surprising reason

0

A PARAMEDIC has issued a warning to all parents this Easter, to avoid giving their children hot cross buns.

While there’s a whole host of Easter treats that are considering a choking risk for children – including chocolate mini eggs and popcorn – you probably wouldn’t think the spiced buns would be on the list.

However, mum Nikki Jurcutz, former paramedic and founder of Tiny Hearts Education, explained that the raisins in hot cross buns can be a hazard.

In a post on Instagram, Nikki said that sultanas are a choking risk, while the soft bread used in the buns “tends to soften and stick together”.

This “sticky clump” can then block a child’s airways, she warned.

Instead, opt for buns without dried fruits, and toast them to make it easier for children to eat them.

And raisins and sultanas are “safer to offer when your child has molars and you feel confident in the chewing and swallowing abilities”, she added in response to a comment.

Easter marshmallows should also be avoided, as they have a “sticky consistency in the mouth” and have a “shape and size that can block the airway”.

Cadbury Creme Eggs are ok because they can be squished, but the downside is that they’re sticky inside.

And as previously stated, chocolate mini eggs – as well as those with nuts – should be avoided at all costs.

Nikki said that the shape and size of the eggs can block the airway, while they are also hard and difficult to chew.

Instead, give your child a hollow Easter egg or Easter bunny this year, that can be broken down into smaller sizes to make it safer to eat.

“This is a great resource to share with your loved ones who may be looking to gift your child a treat this Easter,” Nikki wrote alongside the Instagram post.

“I love this page SO MUCH,” one person praised in the comments section.

“Thank you for sharing this!” another mum said.

“Our 16 month old hasn’t had any candy yet and I’ve been thinking about letting her have something for Easter.

“The hollow chocolate is the only thing I’ve really been considering since everything else seems a little scary to me and this confirms my instincts!”

“Thank you! I was wondering about the hot cross buns so this is helpful!” a third said.
