Videos showed the man — named in clips as Toby — running down the street with arms flailing.
At one point the wild marine was bundled into the back of a Tuk Tuk on the crowded street.
Another clip showed the commando grabbing a moped driver in traffic and appearing to bite his neck before a pair of uniformed policeman hauled him off.
Cops hauled the marine over to a metal fence where a comrade appeared to try and calm him.
A second marine, whose shirt was open, said: “Toby, they are not going to let this go, mate.”
The UK troops are part of the Littoral Strike Group and have been docked in Chennai since last week.
A Royal Navy spokesman said there is an investigation, adding: “We can confirm an incident involving UK service personnel in Chennai, India.”
The marines were marched back to their ship but none of them were arrested.
