Britain and EU ‘within kissing distance’ of striking a deal on Gibraltar post-Brexit
BRITAIN and the EU are “within kissing distance” of striking a deal on Gibraltar.
Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron flew to Brussels yesterday for talks on the Rock’s status post-Brexit.
The UK has been resisting Spanish demands to station its own border guards at the airport, which is also an RAF base.
Another sticking point has been free movement from the British Overseas Territory into the bloc.
Negotiations ended yesterday without a joint statement hailed a “constructive atmosphere” with “significant progress”.
Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said: “We are very, very, very close.
“In English we say within spitting distance but actually it is nice to say we are within kissing distance.”
While not disclosing the details, the official communiqué said: “General political lines have been agreed, including on airport, goods and mobility.
“Negotiations will continue over the coming weeks to conclude the UK-EU Agreement.”
