OpenAI announced a new model for all users during its Spring Update called GPT-4o. Here’s what we know about it.
What is ChatGPT-4o?
During a livestream, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o, their latest flagship model.
Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer showcased its enhanced speed and improved capabilities across text, vision, and audio.
ChatGPT is a language model designed to generate text.
You give it a prompt, like “Write a short poem about flowers,” and it responds with text crafted to match that request.
When functioning properly, the text appears as though a human wrote it, flowing naturally.
GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, which is the technical term for this type of model that specialises in creating AI-generated content.
“These models were trained on vast amounts of data from the internet written by humans, including conversations, so the responses it provides may sound human-like,” Open AI explained.
ChatGPT-4o is the most advanced model it has released to the public so far.
How can I access ChatGPT-4o?
GPT-4o is already accessible across ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team, as well as in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API.
Users on the free tier will automatically be upgraded to GPT-4o, although the number of messages they can send may vary depending on usage.
Is ChatGPT-4o free?
GPT-4o is free on the ChatGPT app and website, so you don’t need a paid subscription to access the smarter GPT-4 tech anymore.
Murati explained that GPT-4o is all about making cutting-edge AI available to everyone, not just the folks who can pay for it.

Its audio chatbot is able to laugh, show emotion, and react on the spot.
Although we’re still waiting for the full set of features, including talking back and forth naturally, GPT-4o is already quicker and sharper than its predecessors.
This AI is super versatile—it can take a look at your photos and tell you what’s in them, translate foreign text, or even guess how you’re feeling just from a selfie.
Plus, it remembers what you talked about before, which makes it able to catch up in a conversation.

GPt-4o can also talk right back at you, similar to that of like Siri or Alexa.
This step forward is inching us closer to a world like in the movie “Her,” where talking to AI feels as real as chatting with a friend.
At a recent demo, GPT-4o wowed everyone by translating between English and Italian on the fly, proving it’s not just smart, but also a handy bridge between languages.
While GPT-4o is available without a subscription, ChatGPT Plus will still have access to more prompts and newer features.
OpenAI’s research lead, Barret Zoph, told WIRED, “There’s a lot of other exciting, future things to come as well.”
In comparison, subscribers to ChatGPT Plus can send GPT-4o five times as many prompts as nonsubscribers before they need to pause or opt for a less advanced model.
So, If you’re aiming to have extensive interactions using OpenAI’s most capable offering, obtaining a subscription is essential.
When is the release date for ChatGPT-4o?
ChatGPT-4o has already been rolled out for free users, albeit in a limited form.
OpenAI has launched GPT-4o with capabilities in text and images, while the exciting voice and video features are set to follow later.
To access it, simply log into your account through a web browser and navigate to the drop-down menu at the top left-hand corner.
If you’ve received the update, it should automatically select GPT-4o and label it as OpenAI’s “newest and most advanced model.”
OpenAI says it’ll “roll out a new version of Voice Mode with GPT-4o in alpha within ChatGPT Plus in the coming weeks”.
What platforms will ChatGPT-4o be available on?
OpenAI is planning to launch a native ChatGPT app, starting with macOS and later expanding to Windows.
Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month, already have access to the macOS version.
However, those using the free version will need to wait until it becomes available in the future.
The rollout for the ChatGPT apps on iOS, Android, and now Mac is happening more gradually.
As of now, GPT-4o is not yet available on iOS or Android, and the new Mac app is still in the process of being released.
