I’m a gypsy mum and I think school is pointless – I’d rather my girls learn to cook and clean than sit in a classroom
A GYPSY woman has revealed why many children in her community do not go to secondary school.
She shared that travellers believe that it is more important for young girls to be at home, learning skills like cooking and cleaning.

In a recent video, the housewife explained why it is common for gypsy children to be pulled out of school.
Not specifying what exactly she was referring to, Suzy said that many young girls are pulled out of school as they teach things that they “don’t need to be learning”.
She said that instead, it is better for the girls to be at home where they can learn to cook and clean, and can look after their younger siblings.
Additionally, Suzy added that gyspy girls get pulled out of school so that they don’t end up mixing with people from outside their community.
She explained that this is because children from the settled community (i.e non-travellers) are allowed to say and do things that gypsy children are not.
“That’s not to say that settled children are bad influences, but that is the reasoning behind it”, she said.
However, replying to a comment posted underneath the video, which questioned whether settled children are bad influences, Suzy said: “Girls are out drinking, sleeping with boys, getting pregnant and there’s baby’s left with no dads, so yeah, they are”.
Suzy said that if the girls do want to learn things then there is always home education, but she said that this is hardly ever the case.
She explained that boys are usually pulled out of school earlier than girls, so that they can start working from a young age, with their dads and uncles.
The mum added that they are also removed from education to stop them from being influenced by settled children.
Suzy’s video, has likely left many open-mouthed, as it has gone viral, racking up 489, 000 views on the video sharing platform.
TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts.
One person said: “It’s not a girls or women’s job to clean and cook.
Facts on Gypsy and Traveller communities
Typically, Gypsies is a term used to describe Romani people, who migrated to Europe from India.
Meanwhile, traveller refers to a group of people who usually have either Irish, Scottish or English heritage.
It’s though that around 300,000 Gypsy Roma and Irish Travellers live in the UK.
Both groups come from nomadic ways of life, however, as it is increasingly difficult to find land to live on many are moving into permanent housing.
They place high value on family life and often live close together even after reaching adult years and getting married.
Often the men are the breadwinners of the family while the women stay home.
While many English gypsy girls are allowed to drink alcohol and go on holiday with their friends before they get married, many Irish traveller girls are not allowed to do this.
“Boys should be taught that from a young age”.
A second person said: “How do you know that they don’t need the stuff taught in secondary schools?
“I use a lot of it every day”.
A third added: “Thank you for sharing your culture.
“I was so confused in primary school when my gypsy friends didn’t join us in high school”.
A fourth chimed in: “I love learning about other cultures and how other people live.”
