Major supermarkets make big changes to opening hours for England v Spain Euro 2024 final – is your local store affected?
EURO 2024 has reached fever pitch as England gear up to battle it out against Spain in the final this Sunday.
Gareth Southgate‘s men will be looking to etch their names into the history books and win a major tournament on foreign soil for the first time.
Three major supermarkets have said they will change their opening hours on Sunday[/caption]Newly-elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer has already hinted at offering Brits another bank holiday if the Three Lions win.
But a number of supermarkets have said they are shaking up their opening hours on Sunday or Monday to give staff time off as well.
Here’s the full list of retailers changing their opening hours.
Lidl
German discounter Lidl has confirmed all its England stores will open one hour later on Monday, regardless of the match outcome.
Lidl stores tend to open at 8am on Mondays meaning most will pull up their shutters to customers at 9am.
Branches will open and close as per normal trading hours on Sunday.
You can check your local Lidl stores’ regular opening hours by using the branch locator tool on its website.
Ryan McDonnell, chief executive officer, said: “We know how much this game means to England fans, and we want to ensure that our colleagues have the chance to celebrate such a significant moment in English football history.
“We couldn’t achieve our goals without our colleagues, so in recognition of their hard work and dedication, this move will allow them to join in the excitement and show support for the England team, and we wish them the best of luck for the big game.”
Tesco
Tesco has also said it is mixing up its opening hours on Sunday.
The UK’s biggest supermarket said it will shut 1,800 Express stores across the country at 7.30pm instead of the usual 10pm or 11pm so employees can watch the game.
The retailer said the move will let thousands of colleagues get home or to the pub in time for kick-off.
Workers won’t be docked pay for the time off.
All online shopping orders already placed for Sunday evening will be honoured and delivered as normal.
Tesco Express and Superstores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be operating normal opening hours on Sunday.
All UK branches will open as normal on Monday.
You can find your nearest Tesco store and its opening hours by using the retailer’s branch locator tool on its website.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s has confirmed its smaller stores and petrol stations across England will close early on Sunday.
Over a thousand branches will be shutting at the earlier time of 7.30pm instead of 10pm or 11pm.
As the match is being held on a Sunday, most larger stores will already be closed by kick off.
This is because stores in England or Wales over 280 square metres by law can only open for six consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays.
All Sainsbury’s stores will open as normal on Monday morning at 6am or 7am.

What are other supermarkets doing?

Asda has not yet responded but we will update this story when it has. Here is what Aldi, Iceland, Morrisons and Co-op said.
Aldi
Aldi runs over 1,000 UK branches, and all will be operating normal opening hours on Sunday and Monday, so there is no change.
The German discounter also runs “Local” branches which are smaller than the average Aldi branch.
However, these will also be operating the same opening hours as normal over the weekend.

Iceland
Iceland said it will be operating the same opening hours as usual on Sunday, with branches closing between 4pm and 5pm.
The same applies to The Food Warehouse stores.
A spokesperson said: “Our Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores in England will close between 4-5pm on Sunday, depending on location, which is in line with our usual operating hours, providing staff and shoppers plenty of time to prepare ahead of the big final.”
