As he doused the flames, Claire rounded up their three children, aged 15, 13 and eight, and two dogs, ran out of the home and dialled 999.
Car salesman Richard, 42, put out the flames before the fire brigade arrived.
Photographer Claire, 41 said they had recently installed the alarm and rewired the six-bedroom, £850,000 home in Andover, Hants.
She added: “If we hadn’t woken and the alarm hadn’t gone off the fire could have very quickly spread to the whole house.
“It’s terrifying. We might not be here now.”
Claire said the £69 massage gun was a gift from one of her husband’s friends.
A brand was recently recalled in the US over fires caused by the devices overheating while recharging.
They are available online for as little as £25 but can cost up to £300.
Claire added: “My husband used it for massaging his muscles after working out but we won’t be getting another.”
Hampshire Fire Service said 11 firefighters made sure the home was safe.
