“I’m not sure if this is a tragegeigh, per se, as both names are at least spelled correctly, but I had a co-worker who named his daughter Melancholy,” she said.
“When I discovered this on my first day on the job, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s sad for her. What’s her middle name?'”
She probably wished she had never asked.
“My new boss took great pleasure in telling me it was Moon,” she said.
You heard that right.
“Yes, he named his daughter Melancholy Moon,” she said.
“He nicknamed her Melly, which I find only marginally better,” she continued.
“I am not sure why you would do this to a child. So maybe this is just a melancholy tragedy and not a tragedeigh, but I thought I’d share anyway!”
One Redditor had their own theory about how the name was chosen.
“This guy just wants to be in an Indie band so bad doesn’t he? That sounds like a Smiths or Weezer album,” they said.
Others were also surprised by the unusual moniker.
“Melancholy is not a name, it’s an adjective,” said a user.
“Melly is a sucky nickname. Might as well call her Belly. Go with Melanie,” they added.
“I would not name a child or pet anything that related to – or sounds or looks like words that relate to – sadness, anger, violence, or death,” another commented.
Others were also left impressed with the girl’s name (stock image)[/caption]“Then again, she might grow up to be a very happy person just out of irony,” they continued.
Others also had thoughts on the name.
“Part of me kind of loves it – melancholia is such a pretty word, like tristesse in French looks kind of like a nice name – but obviously it’s not a great name,” said a Redditor.
“You know what? I think I would have preferred Melancholia,” commented another.
“At least then you could nickname her Lia,” they added.
