I’m a 47-year-old makeup artist – the dos and don’ts for mature skin and the common mistake that’s making you look older
A 47-YEAR-OLD makeup artist demonstrated the technique she uses to flatter her mature skin.
The beauty expert revealed her go-to tips as well as the common mistakes that add years to your appearance.
In her viral video, TikTok user Erica Taylor (@ericataylor2347) demonstrated the method to follow alongside the common errors to avoid.
First, she began applying the no-go techniques to one side of her face.
Erica advised women with mature skin to never allow their base moisturizer or sunscreen to dry before carrying on to their next step.
She explained that focus should be put on making the skin appear more dewy not dry.
The makeup pro also recommended older women steer clear of blurring pore-minimising smoothing primers as they have “a whole lot of silicone.”
She also suggested avoiding mattifying makeup unless your skin is “super oily” as it dries out your complexion.
Similarly she advised against using light matte concealer under your eyes.
Finally, Erica told her older audience not to bake as it only looks smooth from further away and tends to highlight wrinkles up close.
She explained that none of her no-gos were bad products but they just might not be right for drier more mature skin.
On the other side of her face, Erica demonstrated her favourite techniques for mature skin, showing a side-by-side comparison.
For her first step, she recommended exfoliating the dead skin with first aid beauty pads.
Next, she recommended applying a hydrating serum or oil to your entire face.
Erica also used a lightweight hydrating cream, which she said “responds beautifully with makeup and gives more of a glow to the skin.”
She used eye balm to prep the area around her eye before applying concealer.
For sunscreen, she recommended opting for a mineral one with a “slight tint to even out redness.”
Erica's go-to products for mature skin
The makeup artist revealed the products she swears by for flattering mature skin.
- Glossier Futuredew Facial Oil-Serum Hybrid, £30, Sephora.
- Extreme Cream Firming and Lifting Moisturiser, £37, Inn Beauty.
- Roc Multi Correxion Revive and Glow Eye Balm, £32.99, Boots.
- Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30, £32, Drunk Elephant.
- Patrick Ta foundation.
- Kosas Revealer Super Creamy and Brightening Concealer, £25, Sephora.
Erica also recommended opting for a skincare infused foundation with hydrating formula, not mattified.
She shared the same advice for choosing out concealer for your under-eyes.
Erica advised anyone with mature skin to apply their powder with a brush instead of a puff so there is “no baking” and you’re “just lightly laying down so glow comes through.”
She showed her audience the different between the two application methods, joking that the don’t side looked “flat like Gumby” while the other looked so glowy that it “bounces and catches the light.”
“The skin maintains a beautiful supple glow and this side is just kind of crusty and chunky,” Erica concluded.
Her followers shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“I’ve got to get that eye balm! Your don’t side looks [like] mine, and I don’t bake,” wrote one viewer.
“I’m usually the crusty side because I don’t know how to put makeup on,” said another person.
“Ever since I started an eye balm, game changer,” commented a third TikTok user.
