EV drivers could save even more by opting to head to a charging point at off-peak times, with some suppliers reducing their rates at night[/caption]

Industry experts have described how EV owners can now charge for less than five pence per mile when compared to refuelling a petrol vehicle.

The analysis from AA has described the findings as a “huge benefit to motorists”.

The new research was calculated from July and has found that electric car drivers on a Standard Rate domestic tariff are paying less than 5p per mile.

Although energy prices could see changes in October, the current bargain has come after a 2p reduction in the Energy Price Cap on July 1.

According to the AA’s Recharge Report the 5p level is a “worst case scenario” since some suppliers offer a reduction in fees for drivers opting to charge at off-peak times.

These times tend to be overnight.

The first report of its kind was launched in December 2022 and recorded the average price to charge an EV was 7.99p for those at home.

This means that from then until now there has been a 61% reduction.

In July, it will cost £30.80 to ‘fill-up’ 80% of an EV’s charge at an ultra-rapid point in public.

Compared to £46.43 for a petrol car, the price is remarkable.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at The AA, told GB News: “Driving an EV for less than five pence a mile is a landmark moment and shows just how cheap running an EV can be.

“As this is the cost based on the Standard Variable rates, savvy EV drivers will have scoped out the best deals across energy providers to bring their costs down further.”

Those who are new to EVs may be wondering what they need to know about charging.

The AA have compiled this handy headline list of monthly updates to catch you up quickly on how EV charging has progressed this year:

  • January – Increase to Energy Price Guarantee nudges up EV charging costs
  • February – Variable rates on ultra-rapid charging fall while pump prices rise
  • March – Freeze in prices as charging costs get advertised on price boards
  • April – Improving chargepoint signage could help show growth in charging network
  • May – EV and fuel price report combined shows £2.50 off a tank of petrol but EV charging costs and diesel plummet faster
  • June – Residential charging costs fall by 12%
  • July – EV charging at home drops to less than 5p per mile

It comes after the perfect car for coffee lovers was unveiled.

Aptly named the Vauxhall MOKKA COFFE-E the new new design concept provides a pull-out barista drawer in the boot.
