I’m an affordable wine hunter and I’ve found the best Whispering Angel dupe for £10… but you’ll need to be quick
WHISPERING Angel became a coveted wine in recent years thanks to its celebrity appeal and fruity character.
But with a magnum of the designer booze costing £42, it’s a bottle that shoppers view more as a payday treat than a weekly shop regular.
Whispering Angel is a coveted wine… but a magnum of the booze costs £42 in most supermarkets[/caption] Affordable wine hunter Andy Pincott shared the ultimate £10 dupe with Fabulous[/caption]Whispering Angel is the flagship wine of Château d’Esclans, a vineyard north of Saint Tropez, France.
It became a celebrity favourite after exploding onto the market in 2006, with Adele famously saying it “turned her into a barking dog”.
The hype is thanks to its gorgeous bottle, Instagrammable look and champagne-style branding.
Lots of sommeliers believe that Whispering Angel made rosé cool again.
But where does that leave us normal folk who can’t regularly part with £22 for 75cl of wine?
Fortunately, it doesn’t leave us in the dark as plenty of supermarkets have shelved dupes of the posh wine.
A concept popularised on TikTok over the last four years, dupes refer to duplicate products which are less expensive alternatives to luxury brand products.
It can apply to everything from fashion and beauty to food and drink.
In the case of Whispering Angel dupes, Asda began shelving the hilariously-named Screaming Devil as a budget alternative.
The Screaming Devil Côtes de Provence was even on offer for just £7.50 in the supermarket for a limited time, but has now reverted back to £13.

“I think the play on words is fun,” affordable wine expert Andy Pincott tells Fabulous.
People will think it’s a dupe, although it’s not directly saying it is.
“It’s a fun play on words that gets you wanting to try it – and it’s much cheaper than Whispering Angel.”
Andy's budget rosé recommendations
Mount Rozier Reserve Fairtrade Frog Chorus Rosé – £7 in Co-op
Pierre Jaurant Le Petit Poulet Rosé – £6.49 in Aldi
Pierre Jaurant Sud De France Rosé – £6.29 in Aldi
Le Cellier de Saint Louis Coteaux Varois en Provence Rosé – £8 in Asda
Montgravet Cinsault Rosé – £6.49 in Waitrose
He described the flavour profile as “dry, smooth with flavours of strawberry and peach, and some hints of melon as well”.
When asked how it compares to Whispering Angel, Andy explained: “It’s a reasonable approximation in that it’s a similar style wine with similar flavour profiles like many wines from the area, but it’s not the same.”
However, with the opportunity to nab it for £7.50 a bottle, he believes it’s a boozey swap worth making.
Asda bosses urged shoppers: “Don’t hesitate to discover the charms of the Screaming Devil.
“Perfumed white peach, bright mango, and passion fruit aromas, along with some rhubarb notes on the nose.
“A really lively vibrant palate, a fresh and saline structure, beautiful zesty length, with intense aromas.”
One armchair wine connoisseur reviewed it as “just fabulous”.
“I heard about this wine while watching This Morning,” they said.
“It’s the rival to Whispering Angel – it’s so good and cheaper too.”
Another buyer chimed in: “This wine is every bit as good as Whispering Angel, the price is just a bonus.
“It’s very easy to drink.
“You will not be disappointed.”
