UP and down the country, kids and teachers will be returning to school next week.
And with the start of a new school year, some teachers might have upgraded their wardrobes over the summer, and want to wear their new clothes.
But a teacher on TikTok, who goes by the username @Misswhitebio, has revealed some of the outfits that are deemed “inappropriate” for teachers to wear.
@Misswhitebio is American, so some of the rules may not apply to British schools, and most schools have their own dress codes for staff to adhere to.
In a video liked by more than 373k people, she sarcastically begins: Welcome to my series of here’s what you can’t wear as a teacher.
“Here’s outfit number one, try to identify why this would not be an appropriate as a teacher.
“Caveat being that all of these are actually modest and very well put together.
“However, we are held to a very high standard in terms of professionalism,” she added.
The first outfit shows a woman wearing a long sleeve grey roll neck, with a baggy v-neck sleeves jumper over the top, a pair of blue jeans and flat shoes.
@Misswhitebio remarked: Go ahead, tell me what’s wrong with this outfit – this one is easy, everyone together now… jeans and holes in the jeans.
“Outfit number two – what’s wrong with this outfit? Why would this get you sent home as a teacher sometimes?”
The second outfit was a female teacher in a classroom wearing a pair of pale linen trousers and a black sleeveless top.
@Misswhitebio said having “no sleeves” would not be appropriate for a teacher to wear in her school.
The third outfit she discussed was a pair of white skinny jeans, sandals, and oversized striped t-shirt.
@Misswhitebio commented: “Take a look, what’s wrong with this outfit, what makes it unprofessional. Tiny holes at the knees.”
The final outfit up for discussion was black leggings, striped oversized t-shirt, a shacket and boots.
@Misswhitebio said: “She’s wearing leggings – not allowed.”
The video received thousands of comments. One that received 33.5k likes read: “Your school seems very strict!”
But someone else related to the video: “This is exactly how my school is.”
One wrote: “Bro, in my school I can’t wear baggy clothes that are too baggy.”
A comment read: “The ripped jeans, I knew immediately. We weren’t allowed to wear jeans except on Fridays.” And someone else had the same rule at their school: “We can’t wear jeans until Friday. No tears in jeans ever though.”
Another teacher said: “I’ve worked at a school where we weren’t allowed to wear open toed shoes.”
Someone else who teaches at a school wrote: “I’ve worked at a school where we weren’t allowed to wear open toed shoes.”
A third teacher spoke about the outfit rules at her school: “I’ve worked at a school where we weren’t allowed to wear open toed shoes.”
What can UK teachers wear?
Most British schools expect teachers to dress professionally and smartly.
This often means wearing “smart business dress” or “professional attire”, which may include:
- Business casual: Smart suits, separate jacket/trouser/skirt combinations, and formal footwear
- Modesty: Clothing that is not overly revealing
- Comfort: Clothing that allows you to move around easily, such as sitting, standing, and raising your arms
- Practicality: Teaching can involve a lot of movement and interaction
- Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and professional.
