I was so excited to try on my cute sarong from Temu but it was a disaster, I’ll never buy fast-fashion again
A WOMAN has vowed never to buy fast-fashion again, after her Temu haul ended in disaster.
Buying from online sites such as Temu and Shein can be very convenient, as you don’t have to waste time trekking from shop to shop to find what you need.
However, it can also be quite risky, as you are unable to try the items on before purchasing.
Mimma Angelica said that she kept seeing an advert online for a swimming costume and a sarong, and was eventually persuaded to buy it.
She ordered the product in a size 16, which is one size larger than she would usually order, to make sure that it fit.
Although the swimming costume fit fine, Mimma revealed that the cheap material was “not the best”.
“But look at the sarong”, she said.
In the picture on the website, the black and yellow sarong looks like it goes all of the way around your body, covering up your legs.
However, as Mimma walked backwards, she revealed that the sarong didn’t fit at all, and left the entirety of one leg exposed.
“There’s not enough fabric to get around my whole body”, she said.
“How am I supposed to wear it?”
“Let this be a lesson to me not to ever buy fast fashion from cheap online stores like Temu.”
Despite the item not fitting, Mimma assured that it would not go to waist, as she planned to give it to her niece, who she said is much smaller than her.
Mimma’s (@mimmaangelica) video has likely left many people open-mouthed, as it has racked up over 330,000 views on the video sharing platform.
TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts, with some suggesting a way Mimma could have made sure the item would fit.
One person said: “I love Temu and Shein, instead of looking at the pictures the site uploads, look at real people’s reviews with their pictures, then you know the quality of the item.”
Why is Temu so cheap?
TEMU exploded onto the scene in late 2022, with people all over social media raving about the low prices.
The company is a Chinese-owned digital marketplace – essentially an online shopping app where people are connected to the retailer directly while the app takes care of the shipping element.
The frenzy over the app is not completely unfounded either as it offers a wide variety of products, including fashion, make-up, electronics and furniture.
According to a report from the US House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, Temu takes advantage of a trade loophole that allows the company to ship duty-free goods directly to the US.
The loophole is called the de minimis exception and it means they can ship goods valued up to $800 (£643) to the US without it being inspected or taxed by US customs.
Temu connects customers directly to manufacturers and only manages how the items are sent to customers.
It means Chinese vendors can essentially sell their products directly to customers and ship it without building a network of warehouses across the globe.
By doing this, they cut down on huge costs and ensure the product itself isn’t marked up extra.
While many of the products seen on the Temu app are from brands with extensive, original collections, many more are dupes of designer brands.
A second person said: “You have to read the comments to see if it’s true to size or you need to size up.
“I’ve ordered a lot from Temu with no issues.”
A third person said: “You need to look at the measurements not the pictures for sizing.”
A fourth added: “I have been buying from Temu and absolutely love everything I’ve gotten so far as have a lot of my family and friends.”
