Irish woman who died in Spain climbing accident named as tributes paid to Dublin student who was ‘gorgeous young lady’
A YOUNG Irish woman who died in a climbing accident in Spain has been named locally as Eve McCarthy.
Eve, 21, was out with a friend near the village of El Chorro, close to the Caminito del Rey walkway near Ardales in Malaga, Spain just after 7pm last Friday evening when she fell around 500ft.
Her male friend survived by grabbing on to a bush-covered rock in the steep gorge.
He is said to have been in a state of shock when he was rescued.
The spot they were in is called the Swiss Sector, next to a hiking area called the Arabic Staircase.
The pair are believed to have taken the wrong route by mistake as they made their descent.
Eve’s body was recovered by emergency services following the tragedy.
The student, from Shankill in Dublin, worked at The Kings Inn pub in nearby Dalkey.
The bar closed for three days over the weekend as it mourned the loss of staff member Eve.
Locals posted online: “So sorry to hear this awful news. Such a lovely girl.”
Another said: “Absolutely shocking news, lovely young woman, thoughts with her family and kings inn family, may Eve rest in peace.”
Another added: “What dreadful news. Sincere condolences to all her colleagues and her heartbroken family. What a lovely girl.”
‘HEARTBREAKING NEWS’
While another person wrote: “So sorry to hear this very sad news. Eve was a gorgeous young lady. Sincere condolences to her family, friends and all in the kings.”
And another posted: “Absolutely heartbreaking news, a beautiful person with a fantastic personality and cheeky smile!! The kings lit up when she worked. Gone far too soon. RIP Eve.”
Band The Muglins, which was supposed to play a gig at the pub on Wednesday, said it was cancelling the session “as a mark of respect for the untimely death of our young friend and staff member at The Kings Inn”.
Eve’s death is the second such fatal accident in the area in just a month, after a young British man also lost his life on the famous ‘Monkey Bridge’ cliff in December.
