I went to the UK’s best sandwich shop that’s gone viral on TikTok due to amazing family history and huge portions

TUCKED down a quiet residential street in South East London is a sandwich shop that has become an internet sensation.

In November Mustard went viral on TikTok after the owner’s daughter posted a video about its sandwiches.

Since then foodies have been queueing around the block to get their hands on its mouthwatering hot meat sarnies and homemade sausage rolls.

Eager to see whether it would live up to the hype, I paid it a visit.

Inside the shop is a large counter that is full to the brim with joints of pulled pork, beef brisket, jerk chicken and sausage rolls.

Owner Nicola Willy-Harrison, 55, is busy behind the counter and greets me with a sunny smile.

Above her are several beaming photographs of Nicola’s father, who was a butcher.

He inspired her love of food and was the main reason she decided to sell hot meat sandwiches in the shop.

She tells me: “I opened the shop as a way to honour my dad, who was a butcher. I’ve always been around meat and I love cooking.

“I just wanted to produce a really good sandwich, which is quite hard to find.”

All the meat is cooked onsite daily and is prepared using a special mix of herbs and spices.

Nicola updates the menu regularly with new seasonal and daily specials.

Today there’s a tempting Buffalo Beef Slider, which is made with BBQ sauce, beef brisket, coleslaw, Monterey Jack cheese and jalapenos.

A line of customers has already formed and one tells me he has driven miles to visit the shop after he saw a video online.

Nicola tells me that the business has gone from strength to strength.

She said: “We can’t make enough sandwiches now the business has picked up.

What's on the menu?

Nicola's menu includes several hot meats, types of breads and condiments. Here is her main menu:

Crispy Pork Belly, apple sauce, stuffing and crispy onions – £9

Jerk Chicken, sweet mash, coleslaw & crispy onions – £11.50

‘The Mustard Mash Up’ Jerk Chicken, mango chutney, BBQ pulled pork, mango chilli sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, crispy onions and scotch bonnet sauce – £15.50

Spicy BBQ Chicken, coleslaw & crispy onions – £9

BBQ Pulled Pork, coleslaw & crispy onions – £9

‘The Chilli Texan’ BBQ pulled pork, habanero sauce, jalapenos, Monterey Jack cheese, crispy onions and Cholula chilli garlic sauce – £11.50

Gammon, mustard, gherkins & crispy onions – £9

‘The Big Philly’ beef brisket, caramelised onion chutney, Monterey Jack cheese, nacho cheese sauce, jalapenos and crispy onions – £13.50

Beef Brisket, horseradish, coleslaw, gherkins & crispy onions – £11.50

Beef Brisket, sweet potato mash & crispy onions – £10

‘The Posh Cheeseburger’, beef brisket, Monterey Jack cheese, gherkins, crispy onions, ketchup & American mustard – £11.50

‘The Big M’ beef brisket, leaves, burger sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, gherkins & crispy onions – £13.50

‘The Smokin Mexican’, beef brisket, Chipotle sauce, leaves, jalapenos, Mexican cheese & crispy onions – £13.50

100% beef hotdog, crispy onions, ketchup & mustard – £7

Gammon & maple syrup sausage roll – £4

Caramelised onion sausage roll – £4

Traditional sausage roll with warming spices – £4

“We work flat out to serve customers from 10am to 3pm and sell out every day.”

The telephone keeps ringing and the team take collection orders in the seconds they have between preparing each sandwich.

One customer orders ‘The Big M’, a beef brisket sandwich with salad, burger sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, gherkins and crispy onions.

Nicola tells me it was one of her first creations, so I decide to give it a taste.

When I take a bite, my mouth is filled with soft tiger bread, which pairs perfectly with the tangy BBQ sauce and kick of the jalapenos.

The sandwich costs £13.50 but you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Nicola’s portions are generous and every sandwich is stuffed to the brim.

The Crispy Pork Belly sandwich is also popular with her regulars.

It costs £9 and is complete with apple sauce, stuffing, and crispy onions.

The soft texture of the stuffing balances well with the crispy onions.

It’s almost like having a pork roast dinner between two pieces of bread.

Of all the sandwiches I tried I would say the Crispy Pork Belly was my favourite.

Next up was ‘The Big Philly’, a beef brisket sandwich with caramelised onion chutney, Monterey Jack cheese, nacho cheese sauce, jalapenos and crispy onions.

I’m a big fan of spicy foods so I loved the mix of the sweet caramelised onion chutney and kick of the jalapenos.

How did Mustard go viral?

Nicola's daughter Maisie Harrison, 29, began making TikToks about the sandwich shop in November.

The young mum often visits the shop and one day decided to film Nicola in action.

The video got 161,000 views and more than 11,000 likes on her account @maisabellaa.

She describes the sandwiches as “the best pork belly you’ll ever have” and “the biggest (and best) sandwiches in south London”.

Maisie said: “I worked at Selfridges and when I went on maternity leave I decided that I didn’t want to go back.

“I started making TikToks and I now create content full-time.”

Maisie’s videos started to get more views and soon customers began to film their own taste tests.

In one video a customer said: “10/10 I would really highly recommend.”

Meanwhile, another customer commented: “Go in there all the time, best ever.”

A third said: “Been going here for years. Absolutely banging!!! Sausage rolls are top tier.”

I’m not normally a fan of a cheese sauce but it really worked with the flavours and textures in this sandwich.

But I couldn’t leave without giving one of the sausage rolls a taste.

I tried the traditional flavour, which is complete with warming spices.

It cost £4 – but it would make a hearty lunch and I was impressed with the mixture of tender sausage and flaky pastry.

More adventurous foodies can also tuck into the gammon and maple syrup or caramelised onion flavours.

The shop is open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, but it’s closed at the weekend.

You can also order the sandwiches via delivery platforms Just Eat and Uber Eats.

Or you can place an order by calling the shop on 07747 021800.

Last year we revealed the nation’s favourite sandwich.

Meanwhile, we tested high street BLTs to find out which supermarket’s were the best.

Plus we revealed the number of sandwiches office workers scoff each year.
