DONALD Trump should exclude Britain from his tariff raids, the Business Secretary pleaded yesterday.

The US imports fewer manufactured goods from the UK than it exports here so we should be spared, Jonathan Reynolds said.

Mr Reynolds told the BBC: “We’ve obviously got a services-based economy.

“The US does not have that deficit with us so if that’s the logic of that position, I think we’ve got an argument to engage with.”

It came after the new President this week doubled down on his plot to impose tariffs across the globe to boost America’s economy.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, Trump said: “If you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff.”

The Republican leader has vowed to impose 25 per cent levies on Canada and Mexico, claiming the countries aren’t doing enough to stop drugs including fentanyl crossing the border.

And he’s said China could be whacked with a 10 per cent tariff as soon as February 1.
