Sir Keir Starmer set to give go-ahead to small nuclear reactors to power MILLIONS of homes

SMALL nuclear reactors to power millions of homes will get the go-ahead — as the PM vowed to stare down the “blockers”.

The Government is putting growth ahead of locals’ concerns and reforms will see more projects approved, creating thousands of jobs.

Rules will be relaxed to allow the small modular reactors to be built on more sites than currently permitted, with no planning expiry date.

Britain’s last reactor, Sizewell B, was built in 1995. Sir Keir Starmer said: “We’ve been let down, and left behind.

“Our energy security has been hostage to Putin, with UK prices sky-rocketing at his whims.

“I’m putting an end to it and saying ‘No’ to the blockers who have strangled our chances of cheaper energy, growth and jobs for far too long.”

Britain’s five nuclear stations, which power 13 million homes, are all nearing the end of their lives.

Only Hinkley Point C, Somerset, is being built — after a 30,000-page eco assessment to get planning permission.

China is building 29 reactors and the EU has 12 in planning stages.
