Major motorway closed after horror crash sparking huge delays and chaos for thousands of commuters in morning rush
A MAJOR motorway has been closed after a horror crash sparking huge delays and chaos for thousands of commuters this morning.
The northbound carriageway of the M1 is currently shut at junction 29a for Chesterfield and Bolsover.
Highway bosses said the collision left a “significant spillage” which has resulted in the need for “emergency resurfacing”.
Traffic is being diverted through exit and entry slip roads.
Motorists have been told to avoid the motorway and face hour-long delays during the morning rush hour traffic.
A spokesman for National Highways East Midlands said: “The M1 in Derbyshire remains closed northbound within J29A for Chesterfield / Bolsover for emergency resurfacing following a collision which resulted in a significant spillage.
“Traffic is being diverted via the exit & entry slip roads. Delays of at least 60 minutes on approach.”
A post on traffic monitoring site Inrix read: “M1 northbound closed, long delays due to emergency resurfacing repairs and earlier accident at J29A A6192 Markham Road (Markham Vale / Bolsover).
“Diversion – via the slip roads.”
The M1 is 193 miles long and connects London to Leeds in Yorkshire.
