In an interview with The Sun’s TV Mag, David has revealed a few shocking secrets about his role as the iconic detective.

Stating that he missed playing Poirot he added: “Of course I miss him. I mean I never knew I was going to play him for 25 years.

“I mean I had a one year contract, I had a one summer contract.

“I had six short stories. And then I was out of work. And then I got the next one.

“And then I did some theatre. And then I got the next one. And then I did the movies. And then I did another television.

“And then I got the next one. And it was year by year by year by year with gaps in between. Until suddenly 25 years on. And that’s a wrap.”

David adds: “And the other question you’ll want to know is what I think about other Poirots. And my answer is I haven’t watched any.

“I haven’t watched any for the simple reason that I knew I would be asked.

“Possibly wanting to know whether I thought they were lesser than mine. So to have no opinion is a good place to be.”

Since finishing Poirot in 2013, David has appeared in series such as Decline and Fall, Doctor Who and His Dark Materials.

David has been cast in a new a Channel 5 drama alongside Lupin star Ludmilla Makowski, called The Au Pair.

David will play George in The Au Pair, which is about a diabetic father who moves to live next door to his daughter Zoe, played by Beyond Paradise’s Sally Bretton.

Zoe, seems to have it all— a successful husband Chris (Kenny Doughty), two adorable stepchildren, a thriving tailoring business and a gorgeous countryside home in a picturesque English town.

However, all is not as it seems as she experiences marital issues and pressure mounts when George moves in next door.

He said: “Most of my screen work, as I’ve said, has been as foreign as coming from other countries. But this was very much me.

“I was watching with my wife. What was interesting is that she found it as extraordinary as me.

“Because she’s never seen me play more who I am. She’s always seen me play Poirot or other foreign gentlemen.

“I suppose the nearest I’ve been to not being foreign was Robert Maxwell. Yes. Very different. Very, very different, yes.

“But this is far more who I am now.”

David concluded by revealing what his wife thought of George: “She found him very interesting, very moving. Very, very moving.”
