Shoppers go wild for new Aldi cocktail that’s only £4.50
ALDI shoppers are getting excited over a new classic cocktail mix that’s being sold by the discount supermarket.
Cocktail lovers can now get their hands on a bottle of Hugo Spritz – just in time for the warmer weather this weekend.
Aldi is selling bottles of the pre-mixed cocktail for just £4.50, which is a bargain compared with usual cocktail prices.
Although less well-known than the summer favourite Aperol Spritz, the Hugo is still considered a classic cocktail.
It usually includes St-Germain elderflower liqueur (although some recipes use elderflower cordial), prosecco, soda water and mint.
Instagram user @bexblah posted a video of the Aldi find, saying the supermarket was “slaying the game” with its new drink.
A caption on her video read: “I can’t believe I found this in Aldi.”
The Instagrammer showed herself taste testing the drink, which she had added mint to and given a quick mix.
“Okay I’m so excited, oh my God,” she said before taking a sip of the drink. “People talk about Aperol Spritz, but Hugo is where it’s at.”
After trying a sip, she let out a gasp and said: “Oh my God, no way it’s good.”
Commenters on the video appeared excited too, with one posting: “Can’t wait to see if my local Aldi had this.”
Another said: “I’ve just bought this! Do you mix with Prosecco or just straight from the bottle?”
The taste tester then replied: “It already had a fizz but also it was quite sweet so mixing with prosecco would probably be gorginaaaa!!! don’t forget the mint!”
A third commenter said: “Hugo is the superior spritz, lidl do mini cans of them too.”
The Hugo Spritz was invented around 2005 and is believed to have been created by bartender Roland Gruber in the northern Italian town of Naturno, near the Austrian border.
It was originally called the Otto and went through a few tweaks before it reached its current form.
The more well-known Aperol Spritz has an unmistakable orange colour and a fresh bittersweet taste.
It includes prosecco, Aperol, soda and a slice of orange.
What other drinks is Aldi releasing?
Aldi has included a selection of spritzes in its new spring/summer wine range for this year.
It launched the range on March 3 and the collection includes a selection of reds, whites, roses, sparkling wines and non-alcoholic mixes, along with the ready-to-drink spritzes.
Alongside the Hugo Spritz, you can also get the Aperitivo Spritz and the Limoncello Spritz.
Aldi says you just need to pour them over ice and enjoy (although it’s worth adding fresh mint leaves to the Hugo Spritz for a more authentic experience).
Each of the drinks is at just 7% ABV.
Aldi is also launching more of its spring/summer wine collection in May.
This includes a 1L bottle of Sangria, for those who want a taste of Spain.
There is also the Argentinian Malbec Rosé, as well as the Sainte Victoire Provence Rosé.
