Blade Fishing Report: 8/4

■ Lake Erie: In a summer filled with reports documenting the wealth of undersized walleye in the big lake, the reefs around the Camp Perry range have been producing catches of decent-sized keepers in recent days, the experts at Netcraft report. There have also been good fish for the cooler caught northwest of North Bass Island. Walleye anglers are casting or trolling harnesses tipped with nightcrawlers, depending on the mood of the wind. Netcraft’s staff also relays information on strong yellow perch catches coming from around Green and Rattlesnake islands, as well as the waters near the “A” and “B” buoys of the Camp Perry firing range. Perch fishermen have also done well northwest of West Sister Island. The proven winner for yellow perch on the lake is the combination of a perch spreader tipped with shiner minnows and fished just off the bottom. Brad Dunkle of Wildwood Anglers reports limit catches of perch taken east of West Sister on spreaders rigged with goldies, a common alternative to emerald shiners once that bait becomes tougher to find. Dunkle also reports an uptick in the number of keeper walleye being taken on the lake after targeting areas around Clinton Reef, between Green and Middle Bass islands, and between Rattlesnake Island and the north side of Sugar Island.
