I read with consternation The Blade’s Behind the News article on Feb. 5, “At war with radical Islam.” That was an ugly reminder of the hateful things President Trump said about Muslims during his presidential campaign, but also of the tremendous harm done two generations ago by the McCarthy Communist witch hunt. The hearings destroyed reputations and livelihoods of many people and set neighbor against neighbor in a vicious campaign to root out a “dangerous conspiracy.”
My father was the founder of Hickory Farms (March 3, ‘‘Hickory Farms moves out of Toledo ‘to attract talent’”). While he has been gone almost a year now, our memories of his accomplishments are not. The current CEO of Hickory Farms may be correct in feeling that she needs to look to a bigger city like Chicago to seek better-educated and more-qualified people to run her company; however, one can be educated and talented without having a college degree.
