We will be hosting a two-day Coaching Clinic June 1-2 where you will have the opportunity to get your Instructor of Beginner Archers (Level 1) certification from Archery BC/Archery Canada.
This certification allows you to teach basic skills to individuals with very little or no experience in archery, and focuses on teaching the fundamentals of archery with an emphasis on safety. This certification is required to teach archery for the club, as required by our insurance, and our paid instructors teaching classes at Saanich Commonwealth (or elsewhere) are required to be certified. Read more about it here.
Cost for the clinic is $150 per person, and the club will subsidize your fee upon successful completion of your certification. The clinic will run from 9am-5pm on both days (Saturday and Sunday) at Saanich Commonwealth Rec Centre and will be taught by a certified Archery BC Learning Facilitator.
We are in need of some more Range Safety Officers (RSOs) to help out at club shoots, and the training is very good at informing you how to run our sport safely. The training is free and all online, and the test is ‘open book’. You’ll find more details on the Archery Canada Website. Once you’ve completed it, you can then be added to the club list of RSOs. We would also appreciate it if those who are currently certified would take a turn on days/evenings when Frank, Helena and Al aren’t available.
On that note, we are also in need of certified Judges. If this is something you would be interested in pursuing, please contact Greg Birtwistle or Al Wills for more information.
Outdoor shooting
The South Vancouver Island Rangers have begun their outdoor shooting schedule again. They shoot Wednesday evenings starting at 7pm. The plan is to participate in the Archery Canada Mail matches. Victoria Bowmen members are invited to shoot with them on their scheduled shooting times. The guest fee is $10, which takes into account our being insured through Archery Canada. They will also be hosting some 900 and other tournaments on Saturdays – watch our site for announcements. If you want to see what it’s all about and check out the facility, just drop by on a Wednesday evening after 7pm at 3498 Luxton Road in Langford (off Happy Valley Rd.). Contact Mike Shea and/or Al Wills for more info.
