Procrastination and TikTok do go hand in hand. President Donald Trump plans to extend the deadline for the TikTok ban a third time. On June 17, he told BBC the deadline would “probably” be pushed back 90 days. “We’ll probably have to get China approval,” Trump said on Air Force One. “I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed Trump will “sign an additional Executive Order this week to keep TikTok up and running.”
The ban is set to take effect on June 19, 75 days after the original April 5 deadline Trump imposed with an executive order on his first day in office. At the time, the Supreme Court upheld the measure forcing TikTok’s Chinese owners, ByteDance, to sell to a U.S.-based company, which was signed into law by former president Joe Biden. Even though Trump himself initially tried to intervene on TikTok’s ownership during his first presidency, he has since come to believe the app helped him win the 2024 election, thanks in part to controversial internet personalities like Adin Ross. Several investors expressed interest in buying the app during the reprieve, including MrBeast; Serena Williams’s husband, Alexis Ohanian; and longtime Trump ally Larry Ellison, but no deals have materialized … yet?
