Jon Stewart Will Go Around the Sun Again at The Daily Show
Back in July, when CBS announced plans to cancel The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in 2026 for “financial” reasons many speculated were political, people wondered whether Comedy Central’s The Daily Show would be next to be sacrificed at the altar of the networks’ shared corporate overlords, Paramount and Skydance. That same month, Jon Stewart, the show’s part-time host and executive producer, commented defiantly on the rumors, albeit with a hint of uncertainty. “I’m not going anywhere. I think,” he said. Well, on November 3, Comedy Central enabled Stewart to keep his promise, because the network announced it had signed him up for another year at the show. “Jon Stewart continues to elevate the genre he created. His return is an ongoing commitment to the incisive comedy and sharp commentary that define The Daily Show,” said Ari Pearce, head of Comedy Central, in a release. He’s not going anywhere — at least not until December 2026, when his new contract expires, and prior to which we’ll presumably go through this dance all over again.
Just a few days ago, on October 31, The New Yorker ran an interview with Stewart with the headline “Will Paramount Cancel Jon Stewart?” In it, Stewart made his intentions to stay at The Daily Show known and discussed how he plans to approach his work in an era when the government may or may not be exerting pressure on the network’s programming. “You don’t compromise on what you do, and you do it till they tell you to leave,” he said. Fortunately, they haven’t told him to leave yet, so his uncompromising voice will stay on the air for now.
