Trump regarding Greenland: ‘I think we’re going to have it.’
President Trump is still pushing to purchase Greenland. He has been in discussions with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has insisted that the island isn’t for sale. Trump sees the island as critical to the national security of the U.S., the security of the free world, and that it would be good for the economy, according to CNBC.
However, even if Trump is able to persuade the Danish PM to do the deal, Tom Høyem, Denmark’s former representative for Greenland, said Trump will need to get the U.K.’s permission because of an agreement made back in 1917, according to Newsweek.
Nevertheless, Trump told reporters on Saturday, “I think we’re going to have it. I think the people want to be with us. I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world.”
