Mayweather vs. McGregor: NSAC appoints referee, judges
Robert Byrd will be the third man in the ring for Mayweather-McGregor
Today during a Nevada State Athletic Commission’s monthly meeting, the athletic commission appointed the officials to work the August 26 Mayweather-McGregor fight.
Veteran referee Robert Byrd was given the assignment, with the commission voting unanimously in his favor as reported by ESPN. Neither Mayweather nor McGregor’s camp voiced any opposition to Byrd being named the referee.
Additionally Burt Clements, Dave Moretti, and Guido Cavalleri were selected as the three official judges for the the fight.
NSAC director Bob Bennett's formal recommendation for referees notably excluded longtime referee Kenny Bayless (who has officiated a number of Mayweather fights) because he openly expressed his unfavorably opinion on the match-up. Bayless said he didn’t see the point in this fight and Bennett expressed to the LA Times that he would not be considered for the position due to those comments.
The commission is also set to listen to arguments from both Mayweather and McGregor’s camps as to why they should be allowed to wear 8oz gloves in this fight — despite regulations calling for 10oz gloves in a 154lb fight.
We’ll have more information on that official decision as it becomes available.
