Taylor decisions game Postol in Glasgow

Taylor dropped the rangy Ukrainian in the tenth

Viktor Postol isn’t done quite yet, but Josh Taylor was the better man in Glasgow today, defeating the Ukrainian veteran in an excellent 12-round scrap.

Despite his worrying performance against Jamshidbek Najmiddinov last September, the 34-year-old Postol (29-2, 12 KO) kept up with the younger, quicker man throughout, even visibly rattling him on more than one occasion. As they went from the middle to the later rounds, however, Taylor (13-0, 11 KO) began to find the mark with powerful left hands, ultimately decking Postol in the 10th.

To his credit, Postol got back to his feet and continued to fight until the final bell, looking to land his long-range right hands and keep Taylor at bay, but the “Tartan Tornado” had more left in the tank and landed the better blows down the stretch in what looked to be a close fight.

The scores (118-110, 117-110, 119-108) were predictably terrible. I wasn’t actively scoring, but Postol almost certainly won more than three rounds and assuredly won more than one. Heck, Victor Loughlin either forgot the 10-8 or committed the judging cardinal sin of scoring a round 10-10, which tells you how much attention he was paying.

Postol was never going to get a fair shake in Glasgow, but he proved that he’s still an elite super lightweight, while Taylor showed that he’s more than ready to try his hand in the next World Boxing Super Series tournament. Good show, lads.
