The Historically Black College and University game features the two teams as MEAC and SWAC division winners.

The Bulldogs went 9-2 this fall while earning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title. Their two losses came against the Florida A&M Rattlers on the opening weekend and the Georgia Southern Eagles two weeks later; SCS would go on to win eight straight after.

The Tigers were even better record-wise, hauling in 11 wins in 13 tries including the championship Southwestern Athletic Conference crown. They also lost in Week 1 to the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks as well as the Grambling State Tigers three weeks later.
