Surace vs Munguia rematch joins Canelo vs Scull on May 3
Bruno Surace and Jaime Munguia will run back 2024’s Upset of the Year in Riyadh this coming May
Salvador Rodriguez, Mike Coppinger, and The Ring all report that a rematch between Bruno Surace and Jaime Munguia will serve as the co-feature for Canelo Alvarez’s May 3rd Riyadh Season debut opposite William Scull.
France’s Surace (26-0-2, 5 KO) had all the signs of a stay-busy opponent for Munguia (44-2, 35 KO) to devour while Top Rank set the stage for a big-name fight with someone like Christian Mbilli. He definitely looked the part for the bulk of the fight, going down in the second round and consistently struggling with Munguia’s pressure, but a shocking moment in the sixth saw him level Munguia with a gnarly right hand to score 2024’s Upset of the Year.
It’s one Munguia will be desperate to get back, and while Surace would probably be better-served returning to 160, one has to imagine that he’s being handsomely compensated for this.
Another interesting wrinkle is the fact that Munguia joined forces with Eddy Reynoso earlier this year. This marks his third major trainer to date; we’ll see whether Reynoso’s the one to finally instill some defensive discipline into Munguia.
