Magomed Ankalaev Teases Future Heavyweight Move Ahead of UFC 320 Title Defense
Magomed Ankalaev, just days away from his crucial first light heavyweight title defense, has hinted at a potential shift to the heavyweight division. This Saturday marks the highly anticipated return of the premier promotion to Las Vegas for UFC 320, where Ankalaev will face Alex Pereira in a headline light heavyweight title bout.
While initial interactions suggested mutual respect, anticipation for the rematch has intensified following a near confrontation between the two fighters at the UFC Performance Institute earlier this week. Pereira, aiming to rectify a disappointing performance in their initial encounter this year, expresses confidence in changing the outcome and already has his sights set on a future opponent once he reclaims the title.
Ankalaev`s Post-UFC 320 Plans: A Potential Heavyweight Transition
Ahead of his title defense, Ankalaev has faced considerable criticism from various sports analysts regarding both his personality and fighting style. Earlier this year, UFC broadcast member Din Thomas even suggested the promotion should consider trading the Russian fighter to PFL in exchange for Dakota Ditcheva. Furthermore, former heavyweight contender Brendan Schaub asserted that Ankalaev is `hurting the UFC` rather than benefiting the organization.
However, the 33-year-old is determined to boost his star power. Should he once again defeat `Poatan,` Ankalaev is seriously contemplating a move to a higher weight class to further cement his legacy. “Yes, (heavyweight) is definitely in my future plans,” Ankalaev disclosed to New York Post Sports. He added, “The weight is going up easy, I get to 110kgs (242lbs) quickly, maybe after a couple more fights, I’ll definitely move up.” Ankalaev reportedly shares a positive relationship with the current interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, having supported the Brit during his long-running dispute with Jon Jones.
Ankalaev and Pereira Identify Likely Next Contender
When Pereira previously dominated the light heavyweight division, a move to heavyweight often seemed inevitable for him, a topic he discussed multiple times. Yet, despite both Ankalaev and Pereira having teased future ascensions in weight, they have surprisingly converged on a consensus for the next probable title challenger in the light heavyweight division: Carlos Ulberg.
`Black Jag` is currently enjoying an impressive nine-fight winning streak, notably knocking out Dominick Reyes just last Saturday at UFC Perth, solidifying his strong claim to a title shot.
