Dodgers get Russell Martin; DJ LeMahieu joins Yankees
The Dodgers, who lost catcher Yasmani Grandal to free agency, acquired catcher Russell Martin from Toronto for two minor-leaguers Friday.
Los Angeles traded right-hander Andrew Sopko and infielder Ronny Brito to the Blue Jays, who will send $16.4 million to the Dodgers to offset some of the $20 million Martin is owed in the final season of his contract.
A four-time All-Star, Martin was with the Dodgers from 2006 through ’10 and helped lead Los Angeles to three playoff appearances. Martin, 35, hit .194 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs last season.
“He was really excited about it,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said of Martin. “L.A. holds a special place in his heart.
