Vermont town hires ex-social studies teacher as top cop

NORWICH, Vt. (AP) — A former social studies teacher is going to become the new police chief in the Vermont town of Norwich.

The Valley News reports that Sgt. Jennifer Frank, a 14-year law enforcement veteran, will assume the role of police chief on April 13 when current chief Doug Robinson retires.

Frank's appointment was announced by Town Manager Herb Durfee at Wednesday meeting of the Selectboard.

The 43-year-old Frank taught in New Hampshire in both the Mascoma Valley Regional School District and in the Newfound Area School District in Bristol.

She says she started thinking about law enforcement after a Mascoma student brought a loaded handgun into her classroom.
