Giants might not use pitching openers as much as first thought
The day after Farhan Zaidi suggested in December that the Giants might take the radical step, for them, of using pitching openers and other nontraditional methods of getting through nine innings, he expressed surprise at how much attention the story got.
The Giants’ president of baseball operations also tried to temper the hue and cry by suggesting the team would not go rogue with their pitching as much as other ballclubs, but only when it makes sense.
Maybe reporters and fans did extrapolate too much out of his original comments.
Zaidi said during a Monday conference call that he did not foresee openers pitching ahead of newly re-signed starter Derek Holland.
