Report: 49ers hire ex-defensive coordinator as assistant; Buckner to Pro Bowl
The 49ers have hired former Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods to serve as their defensive passing-game coordinator, the NFL Network reported.
The newly created title comes after secondary coach Jeff Hafley left to become the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Prior to serving as Denver’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, Woods, 48, was the Broncos defensive backs coach from 2015-16.
He’s also coached defensive backs with the Raiders (2014), Vikings (2006-2013) and Buccaneers (2004-2005). Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was a low-level offensive assiatnt during Woods’ two seasons in Tampa Bay.
Woods will help oversee a secondary that includes a host of recent draft picks who will be vying for starting jobs.
