Sensors on players’ pads? Techies are taking over hockey

The chip won’t lie.

That’s how commissioner Gary Bettman explained what fans can expect once a puck and player tracking system infiltrates the league as early as next season. Saturday’s All-Star Game at SAP Center will offer a sneak preview of the technology that’s coming the NHL’s way.

“And, no, we are not bringing the glowing puck back,” Bettman said.

With a small sensor planted on the shoulder pad of every player, in addition to one also built into every frozen puck, tracking technology will generate data points for every game played for almost anything a techie mind can imagine.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Bettman said. “The applications are endless.
