Indiana lawmakers revise bill on passing stopped buses

0

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana lawmakers have revised a bill that seeks to catch motorists who pass stopped school buses while children are near to address concerns of policing for profit.

The Indiana House Courts and Criminal Code Committee on Wednesday amended the bill to bar schools or camera vendors from profiting from the camera enforcement. Fines collected can be used to pay for camera equipment.

Republican Sen. Randy Head is the bill's sponsor. He says the goal isn't to make money, but it's to deter drivers from passing a school bus that has its stop arm extended.

The bill passed the Senate last month. It'll now be considered by the full House.

Parents of three children fatally struck at a bus stop last year say they're happy with the bill's progress.
