A’s score three times in 11th but still lose at Toronto
TORONTO - No matter what they do, the A’s cannot beat the Blue Jays and Sunday, they took it to the extreme.
Oakland, which hadn’t held a lead since the first of six games against Toronto, scored three times in the 11th and with All-Star closer Blake Treinen on the mound, appeared poised to prevent a Blue Jays’ sweep of the season series. But Toronto got two men on to open the bottom of the 1tth, and with one out, Brandon Drury - whose homer in the ninth beat Oakland on Friday - smacked a three-run game-tying shot to right. Justin Smoak then provided the winning blow, an RBI single down the first-base line that sent in Freddy Galvis from second.
Treinen, who was working his second inning, hadn’t allowed a run in 10 of 11 outings entering the day. He hadn’t pitched in the previous three days. Rowdy Tellez, who led off the 11th with a double, was just the second left-handed batter to record a hit off Treinen this year; lefties were 1-for-16 against Treinen.
A’s starter Chris Bassitt pitched extremely well in the finale, working seven innings and allowing only one run, and cleanup hitter Khris Davis ended a long streak without an extra base hit.
Stephen Piscotty went hitless in the series but he walked to open the 11th against lefty Thomas Pannone, and Kendrys Morales moved him to third with a single before Ramón Laureano’s sac fly to deep center. Josh Phegley stepped up hitless in his 12 previous at-bats against Toronto this year and he whacked a drive off the wall in left to send in Morales. After an intentional walk to Marcus Semien, Pannone walked Robbie Grossman, and Elvis Luciano took over and hit Matt Chapman to send in the A’s final run.
A’s infielder Eric Sogard, who had three hits, including a leadoff homer and a 10th inning double off Treinen. Sogard has hit safely in all 10 games he’s...
