New RI education chief tours schools in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's new state education commissioner, Angelica Infante-Green, began her first day on the job Monday touring schools in Providence and Barrington, a week after the state announced it will conduct a 60-day review of the capital's troubled schools.
Gov. Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza announced plans for the state Department of Education review last week.
Raimondo told WPRO that superficial shifts are not enough and that the system is broken and needs major changes.
Infante-Green says she recognizes that people are resistant to change and that the state's role is to allow the district to do the best job possible.
Infante-Green grew up in New York City and recently left her job as a deputy commissioner in the New York State Department of Education.
