Oprah Winfrey gets emotional at Hollywood empowerment event

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oprah Winfrey has accepted the inaugural Empowerment in Entertainment Award at an emotional luncheon where two students learned their lives were being changed with full college scholarships. The moment brought tears to Winfrey's eyes.

The award bestowed by the entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter, will henceforth be known as the Oprah Winfrey Empowerment in Entertainment Award.

Winfrey says she didn't need another award, but relented in accepting when she learned about the event would also announce paid internships to 20 underprivileged high school juniors. Two will get full scholarships to Howard University and Emerson College.

Other speakers Tuesday included Alicia Keys, Ciara, Selena Gomez, Kumail Nanjiani and Don Lemon.

THR publisher Lynne Segall dedicated the luncheon to director John Singleton , who passed away Monday, who she said embodied everything the event was trying to do.
