GOP dispute stalls governor's adult scholarship program

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A dispute among Missouri Republican senators over school choice is delaying a proposal for a $22 million adult scholarship program.

The so-called Fast Track bill is an important piece of Gov. Mike Parson's workforce development agenda. It would provide money for adults seeking undergraduate degrees in high-demand jobs.

But a member of the Conservative Caucus said Tuesday the bill would not pass unless it includes school vouchers for K-12 students.

The Kansas City Star reports it is the latest example of the group of six senators challenging fellow Republicans on parts of Parson's agenda.

State Sen. Andrew Koenig, of Manchester, said the proposal won't pass unless it includes Missouri Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, which would give families tax credits for money spent on schools, whether public, private or online.
