Men's college basketball looking at longer 3-point shot

0

If approved by the playing rules oversight panel on June 5, Division I would adopt a 3-point line of 22 feet and 1 3/4 inches in time for the 2019-20 season. The current distance is 20-9.

Division II and III wouldn't implement the rule change until the 2020-21 season for financial reasons.

"I like it a lot,'' Brown said. "I think there's an awful lot of shot-takers out there and not enough shot makers. I think what it's going to do is backing it up makes it a little more challenging and maybe the marginal shooter isn't taking them. It puts a premium on shooting. I think it helps the spacing of the game as well."

In a news release, the NCAA rules committee said there's a trend of the 3-point shot becoming "too prevalent" in men's college basketball. The committee also stated a deeper 3-point line should space the floor by making the defense cover more of the court, which in turn will open the lane for more dribble drives.
