Lawyer: Harvey Weinstein hospitalized after his return to New York from upstate jail

Times Union

Harvey Weinstein's lawyer says the onetime movie mogul has been hospitalized for a battery of tests after his return to New York City following an appeals court ruling nullifying his 2020 rape conviction. Attorney Arthur Aidala said Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday to city jails. On Thursday, the New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction after concluding that a trial judge permitted too much evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. Читать дальше...

Moderate Republicans look to stave off challenges from the right at Utah party convention

Times Union

Moderate Utah Republicans will look to stave off farther-right challengers at a state GOP convention that tends to favor the most conservative contenders. All eyes are on the crowded race to succeed U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney. The pool of nearly a dozen Republicans at Saturday’s convention includes a congressman, a Trump-backed mayor, a former state legislative leader and the lawyer son of Utah’s longest serving U.S. senator. Whoever is selected could get a leg up on the June 25 primary, but that is no guarantee of winning. Читать дальше...

Times Union

The United Auto Workers union announced it reached a last-minute tentative agreement with truck and bus manufacturer Daimler Truck on Friday evening, averting a potential strike of more than 7,000 workers. The union struck a four-year agreement with the German company just before the expiration of the previous contract, which was enacted six years ago. It covers workers at various plants in North Carolina — where Daimler makes Thomas Built Buses, Freightliner and Western Star trucks — as well as... Читать дальше...

Instagram, YouTube the biggest likely winners of TikTok ban but smaller rivals could rise too

Times Union

While a bill to ban TikTok if it doesn't change owners has received President Joe Biden's signature, it could still be years before the popular video-sharing app is actually blocked from U.S. app stores — if it is blocked at all. Still, rivals that stand to benefit form a TikTok ban could see the benefits much earlier. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, may see more advertisers amid uncertainty for its biggest rival. Creators, dealing with uncertainty themselves are also expanding to other platforms if they weren't already... Читать дальше...

Times Union

HAVANA (AP) — Alejandro Fonseca stood in line for several hours outside a bank in Havana hoping to withdraw Cuban pesos from an ATM, but when it was almost his turn, the cash ran out. Oregon's Sports Bra, a pub for women's sports fans, plans national expansion as interest booms

Times Union

An Oregon sports bar focusing on and showing only women's athletics has plans to expand across the country through a franchise model. The Sports Bra opened two years ago in Portland, the state's largest city. Its founder and CEO says she already has fielded hundreds of inquiries from potential partners. The move comes as interest in women's sports is at an all-time high, embodied most recently by the frenzy over University of Iowa and now Indiana Fever basketball star Caitlin Clark. As the fan base and engagement grow... Читать дальше...

Retrial of Harvey Weinstein unlikely to occur soon, if ever, experts say

Times Union

Legal experts say the retrial in New York of Harvey Weinstein won't be coming to a courtroom anytime soon, if ever. The ruling Thursday by the New York Court of Appeals voided the 2020 conviction of the onetime movie powerbroker. Prosecutors say Weinstein forced young actors to submit to his prurient desires by dangling his ability to make or break their careers. Several lawyers said in interviews Friday that it would be a long road to reach a new trial of the ailing movie mogul, who remains behind... Читать дальше...

Trump promised big plans to flip Black and Latino voters. Many Republicans are waiting to see them

Times Union

Donald Trump has promised big plans for recruiting voters in Black, Latino and Asian communities. But five months before the general election votes are cast, the former president’s campaign has little apparent organization to show for those ambitions. The Trump campaign removed its point person for coalitions and hasn’t announced a replacement. The Republican Party’s minority outreach offices across the country have been shuttered and replaced by businesses that include a check-cashing store, an ice cream shop and a sex-toy store. Biden officials indefinitely postpone ban on menthol cigarettes amid election-year pushback

Times Union

President Joe Biden’s administration is again delaying a sweeping plan to ban menthol cigarettes. Anti-smoking advocates are upset about the delay, but the decision could avoid angering Black voters ahead of November elections. Biden’s top health official said Friday the administration would take more time to consider feedback on the ban, including from civil rights leaders. The announcement is another setback for the health officials at the Food and Drug Administration. They drafted the ban and... Читать дальше...
