Corps scoping meetings for plans in south-central Louisiana
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers has meetings Tuesday and Wednesday to hear what south-central Louisiana residents want from and can offer to a feasibility study for hurricane protection and storm damage reduction.
Tuesday's scoping meeting is at the Cade Community Center in St. Martinville and Wednesday's in the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. Each starts at 6 p.m.
Officials say approaches being considered range from realigning levees to floodproofing and even buying out homes. Floodproofing includes making living areas watertight and so-called "wet floodproofing " to limit damages in non-living areas such as basements or attached garages.
Questions for the public include whether storm and flood problems have not been covered, whether alternative strategies might work better, and whether they know of additional data and studies.
