News of the day from across the nation
1 Severe storms: New Orleans residents woke to flooded streets Sunday as strong storms with heavy rain moved through the region. Flooding also caused the Mississippi Highway Patrol to close part of Highway 49 in Stone County on Sunday, and dozens of residents in the area were forced from their homes by high water. The drenching rain may also have contributed to the derailment of a freight train Saturday near Lumberton, Miss. A Norfolk Southern representative said three of the cars were carrying steel and 25 were empty. No hazardous materials were involved, and no injuries were reported.
