Screech owls, barn owls, great horned owls and snowy owls await at Winter Raptor Fast. Bald eagles and falcons will be there, too. And you can watch them fly. The ninth annual event, hosted by the Fort Edward-based Grasslands Bird Trust, will feature programs spotlighting live birds of prey hosted by groups such as the New York State Wildlife Rehab Council, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge & Rehab Center. Proceeds from Winter Raptor Fest will help the Grasslands Bird Trust protect endangered grasslands birds in Washington County. 10 a.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. Sunday. $6-$12; free for children under 6. Fishing contests, hydroflight demonstrations, pony rides and plenty of fun are all part of the village of Waterford's annual Canal Fest. The two-day event, which marks the opening of canal season in New York, also features live music on Saturday (Er Go Blu, Khaki Brothers) and a live broadcast by RadioRadioX.com on Sunday. Demonstrations of hydroflying—an extreme sport where participants on flyboards use the power of water to shoot into the air and do tricks—will be held four times on Saturday and three times on Sunday. Pony rides, face painting, a petting zoo and performances by the Spendwood School of Dance and Gymnastics will be set up at Lock 2 Park.
