The Independent

One of the many bizarre proposals in the Government’s Immigration Bill states that public-sector workers in “customer-facing” jobs will need to be fluent in English. Because apparently, of all the things wrong with our austerity-slashed, near-crippled public services, the most worrying one is that staff might not be speaking the most loquacious form of English.

Navy JROTC camp builds character, not just campfires

Stars and Stripes

I was spending a week in the Great Smoky Mountains, looking ahead days of camping, white-water rafting, canoeing and swimming in a genuine swimming hole. It sounds like a dream vacation, right? Just one catch: I was chaperoning 34 teenagers. For six days.

Thousands of mines with toxic water lie under the West

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DENVER (AP) — Beneath the western United States lie thousands of old mining tunnels filled with the same toxic stew that spilled into a Colorado river last week, turning it into a nauseating yellow concoction and stoking alarm about contamination of drinking water. Though the spill into the Animas River in southern Colorado spill is unusual for its size, it's only the latest instance of the region grappling with the toxic legacy of a mining boom. Until the late 1970s there were no regulations on mining in most of the region... Читать дальше...
